Church Cottage is a beautifully restored 400 year old stone cottage in the centre of this popular Polden Hill village. It is 7 miles from junction 23 on the M5 so provides very easy access to Bath, Bristol, Wells, Glastonbury, Clark’s Village, Exmoor, Millfield School, Cheddar and the Mendips. An excellent area for National Trust properties, country markets, bird watching, walking and cycling. The famous Starlings are on Shapwick Heath from November to February. Shapwick itself is a small rural community with a 1400c church. Most of the properties in the village are built of the local blue lias stone. There are no pubs or shops in the village, but both available within a mile.

The cottage has retained a lot of its charm, flag stone floors, woodburning stoves, heavy beams and a 16sq. foot inglenook. There is full central heating and an Aga. The bedrooms are warm and comfortable, with pure cotton bedding, towels and bath robes. Bath toiletries also available. There are Goose Down duvets unless blankets are preferred. Fresh flowers, usually from the walled garden, are a feature. There is a drying room, and laundry can be done by arrangement.

The food is as local as possible, and always freshly cooked to order. No microwaves. Special diets happily catered for if mentioned when booking. Home made bread a fixture. Breakfast is served between 8.00 and 9.30 a.m. unless required earlier. Parking is immediately outside the cottage.

There are 2 double , en suite rooms. One in the cottage with bath and shower, the other in “The Potting Shed”, a separate restored stone building, with a king size bed, large shower, T.V. chiller for fresh milk, and tea tray. It is situated in the garden, 5 yards from the cottage, offering peace and escapism, and only overlooked by the garden and church. It has its own private seating area.

Although the cottage is right in the centre of the village the much loved garden is wonderfully tranquil and not overlooked by anyone. The cottage is adjacent to the church and benefits from their beautifully maintained grounds and enormous cedar trees.

Tariff. £85.00 a night for The Potting Shed, £70.00 for the cottage. These prices are for 2 people and include drinks on arrival and a proper breakfast. For single occupants it is £75.00 and £60.00 respectively. There are reductions for longer stays. Directions and map. Dinner. A variety of local places available, and samples of menus and costs at the cottage.

Open all year.
